Since I joined the Twitter community in the Fall of last year, I have had the pleasure of being introduced to numerous restaurants around OKC that I might not have otherwise visited. One of those is Iguana Grill. I became familiar with them at the tail end of the “Taco Tuesday” debacle ( Read more here ), and realized I needed to try it out.

Mexican cuisine is one of my favorites; who doesn’t love homemade guacamole, fresh salsa and amazing enchiladas? So I headed to Iguana for lunch to meet a few Twitter followers I had not met in person. Iguana is located downtown, but I was pleasantly surprised that parking was not at all an issue. They have their own lot, and there is plenty of street parking as well.

The menu is part traditional Tex-Mex fare and part unique Mexican flavors with a twist. As with most Mexican restaurants, we were served fresh chips and salsa upon being seated. The salsa was good. It was very fresh and had a touch of spiciness without being overpowering.

Besides the standard tacos, quesadillas and burritos, the lunch menu offers several weekly specials, including my choice on this visit of butternut squash enchiladas. The choices of sides are a bit out-of-the-ordinary and include green or red rice, roasted potatoes, grilled vegetables, jicama slaw and roasted corn on the cob. When my enchiladas arrived, I was thrilled to see a nice-sized scoop of guacamole accompanying my entree. (Usually a lunch portion would not include guacamole, so this was certainly a welcome treat.) The enchiladas were fantastic; sweet flavor with a bit of smokiness and the guac was also perfect.

I have visited Iguana several times since that original trip, and each time have ordered a different entree. Everything I have tried has been fresh and well prepared. I’ve heard some grumblings about how crowded it can get in the evenings or how loud the restaurant can be, but the few times I have visited during lunch have been excellent. Prices range from $7.00 for two tamales to $10.50 for an enchilada platter that includes two sides. Next time your headed Downtown to catch a Thunder basketball game or see the Redhawks play under the lights, stop by Iguana and treat your taste buds to a Mexican treat.

Carmelized green beans?! Thank goodness they are opening a new location in Nichols Hills plaza- there are so many dishes I need to try. (You, me, salsa and margaritas on the patio??) )

  3. By far my fav salsa in the city. I always get the chopped salad and love it – but fair warning, they make it slightly different every single time.
